Holocaust Remembrance
Nachum Robinson was born in Poland on September 26, 1909, and moved to Vienna when he was five. In 1938 he got married to Greta Fried, now Greta Robinson, who was born in Vienna. Nachum had 6 siblings, 4 sisters and 2 brothers. He and his dad owned and worked at a garment store.
During Kristallnacht on November 11, 1938, the Nazis vandalized and took over their store, and took Nachum Robinson to the concentration camp, Dachau. In this time, the Nazis made lists of people to take to concentration camps. Because Nachum was young and fit, he was the first person in his family to be put on a list, and he was soon taken on a train and sent to Dachau.
Greta was devastated. A few weeks later, Greta was standing in line asking permission to leave the country. When she got to the end of the line, Adolf Eichmann was there and asked what she wanted and she explained how she wanted to leave the country with her husband, but her husband is now in Dachau. He asked for more information about Nachum, and the next day, February 28, 1939, Nachum returned home.
Soon after Nachum returned home, the family got help from the Zionist Chigo Torczyner, who helped most of them leave the country. Nachum and his family left Vienna, travelled for 6 weeks, and finally arrived in Israel on a boat called Liesel on June 1st 1939.
Two of Nachum's siblings escaped to New York and two more of his siblings went to Israel with Nachum. One of his brothers, David, decided to stay in Austria with his pregnant wife. David soon ended up being sent to a concentration camp, and died in the camp. In 1940, Nachum had his first son, David, and in 1949 he had his second kid, my grandpa Isaac.
Nachum and Greta didn’t talk about the holocaust a lot so my grandpa, Isaac, learned this story from his cousins.
Nachum died on January 17, 1985, living 75 years. Greta, sadly died one year later on April 3rd 1986, living 73 years.
